#RMOTD – Leningrad

Our Russian Music of the Day is none other than the one and only controversial band – Leningrad! 😀

leningrad 2011b

Hey guys, long time no see! It’s been suuuch a long time from work work work work work

l0d7ask8abot7a0si

But enough about that! I am actually very, very excited to introduce you to these guys for a long time now! 😀 Along with Mumiy Troll, they’re definitely one of my favourite bands from Russia hands down.

Leningrad is a popular ska-punk rock band hailing from Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), and the 14-member band is led by their leader Sergey “Shnur” Shnurov. Although they briefly disbanded in 2008, they reunited again in 2010, choosing the red-head jazz singer Yuliya Kogan as their main vocalist.

From what my Russian friend told me when he introduced me to their music, they are quite notorious with their use of vulgar words in their songs, singing about sex and alcoholism in their music, leading them at one point being so disliked by the then mayor of Moscow, Yuriy Luzhkov, that he banned them from attempting to put on any large-scale events in the city during his term in the office!

But, hey! As the frontman himself said,

Our songs are just about the good sides of life, vodka and girls.

Well said, Shnur. Well said. 😉

If any of you are interested in an in-depth article regarding the band, you can click the link here. Now time for some goodies! 😀

Leningrad – Sweet Dreams

*headbangs to song* mmm yeah \m/ \m/

Holy crap this POV-camera be making me dizzy doe! @_@

Leningrad – Pussy-talker

Yeeeeah I’m not really sure if I wanna know what the lyrics mean.

On a serious note, Yuliya doesn’t fail on being charismatic here! 😀

Leningrad – No and No Again

Another one featuring Shnur as the main vocals. Yuliya’s voice, even after all these years, never fails to impress me!

Leningrad – Love Is…

Look at the video carefully and see what’s odd. (Surprise – Yuliya has a baby bump! 😄)

Also, why do I feel like the song is weirdly going to be “deep” (no pun intended) for a Leningrad song? …no? Ok. ._.

And last but not least…

Leningrad – Hot Winter

So from what I’ve heard the lyrics are basically just “spray c*m” or something.

…it must be really odd if I’m singing this so happily in front of a Russian then ahaha. 😝

Phew that was a lot! Hope you like their music guys! Feel free to comment or follow me! 🙂

    1. Yeah Japan was really fun! It also sooooo nice to see them be so disciplined – like, even in Hong Kong, when people DO stand on both lines on the railway, whenever the door opens, a lot of people still rush inside instead of letting the people get off the station, so it was really sweet the Japanese were so considerate! I had my first snow experience there too and enjoyed skiing very much so I will very much be back next year, on summer!! 😀

      1. Yes, I had the same experience with how considerate the people were. If you lose your umbrella, it’ll be returned to lost and found. If you drop your wallet, someone picks it up and makes sure you have your money. They leave free books outside. People don’t even have to lock their doors. At least most places where I was visiting. The J-rock shows I went to had a place and space for chaos but they always stopped the show to make sure people were okay in the mosh. And then when the para para happens all at the same time because everyone knows the songs and follows the bands… it’s breathtaking. I miss it more than anywhere else… and sometimes I will have a memory where I think I can smell it.
I’m from a place where skiing is hugely popular, but you know… I still never did it. That must have been wonderful to ski in Japan. Thanks for sharing your travel insights.

    1. Yeah, I’ve just googled the lyrics and my Russian friend was right – 90% of the lyrics were “bryzgi malafi” which translated to “squirt c*m” ahaha. Thanks! I’ll be sure to post consistently now hehe. 🙂
